Unique Jewelry Box Prototype
Просмотров 5685 месяцев назад
Austin Suh designed and build this prototype for a rather unique jewelry box. It uses a spherical six-bar linkage to guide the lid in an smooth yet unexpected opening movement.
Grinch Walker

Melissa Lepe, Sebastian Petcu, Esteban Ruiz, Purushotham Verman and Jasper Yao designed and built this walker as a tribute to the Grinch Who Stole Christmas.
Tio de Nadal Walker
Просмотров 2488 месяцев назад
Paula Simo, Lois Meira, Eudald Sangenis, and Marc Quiroga designed and built this walker as a celebration of Tio de Nadal, the magical log of Catalan Christmas tradition.
Stegosaurus Walker
Просмотров 3348 месяцев назад
Cristian Albrektsen, Itzel Montoya, Matthew Reber, John Williams, and Megan Yang designed and built this Stegosaurus walker as the first phase of their Senior Project. The next phase is to make it autonomous.
Robotic Rowboat
Просмотров 8148 месяцев назад
Jiaji Li designed and constructed this prototype for a Robotic Rowboat. It consists of two independently controlled spherical four-bar linkages. The oar blade is perpendicular to the water surface during the power stroke and parallel to the surface during the return stroke.
Quaternions and Kinematics: BYU Lecture

A study group formed by BYU students invited me to explain Quaternions and how they are used in Kinematics. This is my attempt to address this for them. I hope you enjoy my somewhat different approach.
Curvature Theory and a Translating Link
Просмотров 53210 месяцев назад
This is two part tutorial: Part 1 shows how to use my Geogebra Curvature Theory tool to design a four-bar linkage with a flat-sided coupler curve; Part 2 shows how construct two additional links, one of which translates without rotating. This translating link is what we use for the foot of our leg mechanism.
Spider Linkage Geogebra Demonstration
Просмотров 55110 месяцев назад
This is a video demonstration of the steps required to construct and animate the linkage in the U.S. Patent No. 1,576,956, Quadruped Walking Mechanism, E. Dunshee (1926) using Geogebra Geometry.
A Steerable Robot-Walker Driven by Two Actuators
Просмотров 39611 месяцев назад
Chenhao Liu and Jiaji Li show the performance of our minimally actuated robot walker for a paper in Robotica. This paper provides the mathematical theory known as Curvature Theory for the design of the two pairs of six-bar legs for this walker. A pair of legs and stepper motor on each side yield a simple versatile walker.
Ruiqi's Panda Walker
Просмотров 45511 месяцев назад
Ruiqi Mao demonstrated his Panda Walker at the 2023 UCInspire final presentations. Eight legs driven four at a time by stepper motors under blue tooth interface control yields a nice walker. UCInspire is a 10 week program that brings students to UCI for summer research. It was great working with him.

Excellent video here. Must be made required viewing to any FSAE participant. As a past FSAE competitor, I have to second the professors lament about driver ergonomics. It gets neglected. Secondly, coming full circle from drivers back to tires; teams with tall/heavy drivers (ave american male…) will be needing 13” wheels to fit all the ither stuff (brakes, bearings, linkages) However, challenge yourselves early on. Teams would do well to strive for small/light driver selection (yes, it is an exclusionary process), and heavy consideration to 10” wheels, it makes design of everything else more challenging, but you will require a smaller engine, have a lighter overall car (@ minimum wb) and if all done well you WILL WIN the events that heavy larger wheeled cars cannot win. My team ran 13”/8”wide hoosiers. They never got warm. 7” wide barely after 30 min of autocross. Also i’m 6’3” I could not confortably fit my feet in the pedalbox. Failure. FSAE WAS FUN!

Really cant stress enough just how good your race videos are. I came from baja then autocross before i found the king of absurd racing. Race mowers. No suspension. Limited quality tires. NLMRA rules. Looking at your green kart learning tool is a great example for front end geometry. People dont realize what suspension does for you till you take it away.

What about shocks that let you independently change fast vs slow damping control on both compression and rebpund? Is that a thing that's possible?

  • @Drunken_Hamster
    @Drunken_Hamster 3 месяца назад

That 1:2 ratio goes completely out the window for long travel suspension like those found on desert trucks, though. No way in hell could you make a 60-inch travel spring and shock to handle 30-40 inches of suspension travel. Where and how the hell would you even package all that?

Do you define track width as wheel mounting surface to wheel mounting surface, or from the outside edge of the tire to the same on the other side? Depending on tire width and wheel offset/backspacing, this could make a huge difference on the accuracy of someone's track width to wheelbase ratio. *EDIT:* Lol, I had paused the video to ask my question literally 4 seconds before it told me. Nice. (It's center to center of the wheels BTW, for anyone watching. So technically neither of my examples unless the wheels also always have 0 offset.)

Great demonstration! My only objection is if you are loading the inside front more, it means it will be rolling more as well. You're going to get the same amount of weight transfer dynamically regardless of caster setting... But with the outside wheel naturally moving upwards, and inside moving downwards, it's giving more roll motion into the chassis. You're basically changing the individual ride heights a small amount like shortening and lengthening the legs of a table. This also equates to more body roll in the entire chassis (assuming >50% front weight distribution like most cars). Front wheel drive stuff in particular is very sensitive to caster changes, and in my experience when making a big change, it also affects the rear camber angle since the body is now tilting over further. Generally to maintain balance (if desired) a small adjustment out back is needed. More caster allows the wheel turning forces to peak sooner than actual grip peaks, but also stronger through the steering wheel. It makes the car easier to drive at the limit, and as you said especially under hard braking.

Got it, on a positive Caster angle, the wheel contact patch follows the the “Axis” of the steering pivot point.. and not the pivot point itself.
